Garden Jobs to be done in January

Our Gardening Group met with Freda for an update on the jobs to be completed in January.

There were some interesting plants to consider for the coming Summer – Gardeners are ‘Perennial’ optimists – and there was much discussion about flowers and fruit. In particular, we had details of our forthcoming Grafting Workshop scheduled for 26 March 2025. There was also a seed exchange with some members offering surplus seed that they had harvested towards the end of 2024.

One problem that was discussed in detail was the wet weather and the rise in the water table that many members were experiencing. Various solutions were offered and considered, but unless we get a dry spring, we are certain to return to this topic.

And the tasks for January included:-

  • Prune apple and pear trees
  • Clean pots and greenhouses
  • Check on the watering of house plants
  • Plants to go for now for winter fragrance
  • Inspect dahlia tubers and cannas
  • Keep an eye on olives and figs when frost is forecast

Our next session will take place on Wednesday 26 February 2025 at 2:00pm
